David Family Estate

In 1910, the David Family home was build in Youngsville, Louisiana, Lafayette Parish by builder and owner James A. Mateu, a dry goods retail merchant and assistant post master for the town of Youngsville. Mr. Mateu, his wife, Marguerite Deron Mateu and their children, Anita and James Deron Lorinzo, lived in the home for approximately 4 years. About 1919, Elie David purchased the home from Mr. Mateu and it has since remained in the family today symbolizing the heritage of 3 generations of Davids in Youngsville for the past 105 years.

The Mateu Family Home - 1913

Description: A strong Greek Revival influence is evident in the style of the David home. Originally, the front of the house was symmetrical with the central entrance flanned on either side by french windows. The ga11ery ran continuously across the front of the house and along both sides. The left side gallery was later enclosed. Ionic co1umns support the gallery; on the corners, the columns rest on paneled bases. The turned ballustrade, columns and newel posts are typical of the Victorian era during which the house was built. The home is a good example of a Victorian interpretation of the Greek Revival style.

History:The house was bui1t in 1910 by James A. Mateu, Sr. who came to Youngsville from New Orleans. He served as assistant postmaster in the Village unti1 1914 when he moved back to New Orleans. The home was rented to Luke Mallet unti1 1919 when it was purchasd by Elie David for $1,800.00.
